Hiring Your First Enterprise Account Executive in New York

New York is one of the best places in the world to hire an enterprise seller. It has dense networks across finance, media, healthcare, advertising and software, and candidates who know how to navigate complex organisations. It is also easy to hire the wrong person.
A successful enterprise AE at a scaled company may have brand awareness, inbound demand, sales engineering and customer references behind them. A first AE at a Seed–Series B AI startup has to build credibility before those advantages exist. The profile, compensation plan and interview process must reflect that difference.
Define “enterprise” before opening the search
Enterprise can mean a $40,000 annual contract sold to a business unit or a seven-figure global agreement involving security, legal and procurement. Those motions require different networks and skills.
Write down the target customer, typical buyer, expected annual contract value, sales cycle and technical complexity. Decide how much pipeline the AE must create personally. If the founder still closes every deal, be honest that this is a founding seller role rather than a territory-management job.
The best New York searches are narrow enough to be credible. “AI experience” is not a useful requirement on its own. Experience selling data infrastructure to banks is different from selling workflow software to marketing teams. Prioritise buyer and motion fit over fashionable keywords.
What should you budget?
Compensation data varies because titles, industries and company stages are inconsistent. RepVue’s US enterprise AE data placed median on-target earnings at $275,000 in July 2026. Salary.com reported an average New York enterprise AE salary of about $116,900 in September 2026, with software and networking roles averaging higher. Use those as reference points, not a substitute for live candidate calibration.
For an early-stage company, the quality of the plan matters as much as the headline OTE. A 50/50 base-variable split is common, but the right structure depends on sales cycle and how much control the seller has over results. If implementation or product readiness can delay revenue, a heavily back-loaded plan may feel unfair.
Model equity, benefits and ramp as part of the package. The first AE is taking company risk and helping to build the motion, so a token option grant will not compete with established employers. Conversely, do not use equity to justify a base salary far below market without a compelling story and transparent ownership terms.
New York pay transparency is part of the process
New York State’s pay-transparency law requires businesses with four or more employees to include a good-faith compensation range and job description for covered opportunities, and to state when compensation is commission-based. Founders should take legal advice on their exact obligations, particularly for remote roles.
Compliance is also good recruiting. A realistic range, clear OTE and written quota assumptions signal that the company understands the market. Wildly broad bands make candidates question whether the role has been properly designed.
The profile that works at an AI startup
Look for evidence of building, not simply tenure at recognisable companies. Strong candidates can explain how they opened accounts, created an internal champion, managed technical evaluation and kept momentum through procurement. They are comfortable bringing founders and engineers into the process without becoming dependent on them.
For AI products, curiosity and judgement matter. The AE does not need to be a machine-learning engineer, but they should be able to understand data flows, limitations, security concerns and where a proof of concept creates genuine evidence. Candidates who sell AI as magic usually create problems later.
New York sector knowledge can be valuable. A seller with credible relationships in financial services or healthcare may accelerate access, but relationships alone are not a sales strategy. Test whether the candidate can create relevance for your product, not just arrange meetings.
A practical interview process
Keep the process demanding but fast. We recommend:
- A founder conversation covering stage, risk and motivation.
- A structured career review focused on quota, attainment, pipeline source, deal size and sales cycle.
- A live discovery exercise using a realistic customer scenario.
- An account plan for one named target, including stakeholders, hypotheses and next steps.
- References with a former manager, peer and cross-functional partner.
Ask what support existed behind past results. How much pipeline was inbound? Which sales engineer joined calls? Was pricing already proven? Context prevents an impressive attainment figure from becoming a false signal.
Search beyond active applicants
The strongest first AEs are rarely waiting on job boards. Build a target map of relevant vendors, adjacent categories and stage-appropriate companies. In New York, that can mean searching around specific customer ecosystems rather than limiting the list to AI startups.
Use founder and investor networks, but do not let referrals replace assessment. Warm introductions improve response rates; they do not guarantee fit. A consistent scorecard protects the company from hiring the most charismatic person in the process.
How Dataworks can help
Dataworks helps early-stage AI companies turn an ambiguous “first enterprise seller” brief into a precise search. We calibrate compensation, map the New York market, approach passive candidates and build an interview process around evidence. Our broader analysis of New York’s AI hiring market explains why the city’s opportunity extends far beyond engineering.
The goal is not to hire the person with the biggest-company logo. It is to find the seller who can turn founder-led wins into a repeatable, honest enterprise motion.
