Descartes was born out of the conviction that climate change calls for a revolutionary approach in insurance to better protect corporations and governments. Catastrophe and man-made disasters are increasing year on year under demographic pressure & climate change. Descartes aims to meet the evolving needs in our complex world by giving clients the ability and strength to quickly bounce back – empowering them to cope with climate change.

At the forefront of artificial intelligence for risk modeling, they apply new technologies such as image recognition or machine learning combined with new generations of data sources, coming from satellites or IoT, to assess and manage risks. This makes fairer products, since all pricing and underwriting is based on advanced data, faster and more accurate at paying claims. Their approach is parametric – clients know exactly which event triggers what payment.

Descartes Underwriting raised 120 million dollars in 2022 to support their growth and to hire key strategic Data&Tech profiles.

The Project

Descartes were having a hard time finding talent at Tech Lead and Manager level and were looking for an external partner with proven Data&Tech recruitment expertise to handle those searches.

They initially wanted to test Dataworks on a first role before releasing more roles and creating a long-lasting partnership on their more niche and senior Data&Tech roles.

The roles

Descartes ended up giving us 3 projects  :

  • Engineering Manager – Data Science (Python, GCP, software development)
  • Engineering Manager – Full-Stack  (JavaScript, GCP, full stack developer)
  • Lead Software Engineer (Python, Python, GCP, software development)

The recruitment process:
-1st HR interview (we handled ourselves)
-2nd interview with the CTO
-At-home Technical Case Study
-Test Debrief with CTO
-Final interview to meet the team

Our Approach

We worked hand in hand with the CTO and HR team from the start to get an in-depth understanding of the technical requirements as well as the context around the hires. The goal for Dataworks was to represent Descartes’ interests to the best of our abilities and pair Descartes with the top 1% of candidates we speak to.

Thanks to the direct contact to the CTO all along the process, we were able to organise a quick and efficient process and negotiate competitive packages on behalf of both parties when Descartes decided to make job offers to some of the candidates we introduced.
